Bio
James is a professional upright bassist and bass guitarist working in a wide variety of genres and performance environments. A teacher with many years of experience, James specialises in providing lessons for the upright bass, bass guitar, fretless bass guitar, and six-string bass guitar, in addition to teaching music theory, jazz and improvisation, and composition.
As a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, James has had the opportunity to study and work with many of Australia’s finest musicians, and uses this knowledge to create a dynamic, insightful learning environment that equips students with the knowledge they need to succeed in all musical pursuits.
James’ approach to teaching emphasises a performance-first approach, aiming to prepare students of all ages and abilities for performance opportunities by developing essential instrumental and theoretical abilities, in addition to broad contextual and stylistic knowledge.
Teaching Info
Lessons are specially tailored to the needs of each individual student, and can include instruction on technique, musicianship, theory, style, and repertoire. All age groups and ability levels are welcome. Material is drawn from pedagogies by Simandl, George Vance, Carol Kaye, and Mark Levine.
Students may undertake instruction on the upright bass, bass guitar, fretless bass guitar, and six-string bass guitar, and develop skills in a range of styles, including jazz, western classical music, soul, funk, rock, pop, and South American music.
