Highly experienced performer and vocal jazz educator, Susan de Jong has just returned from 15 yrs teaching in New Zealand at the Christchurch Jazz School, New Zealand School of Music and the University of Auckland. As a performer she has sung at festivals throughout Australia and New Zealand including Manly, York, Magnetic Island, Tauranga, Nelson, Christchurch and was a finalist at the National Jazz Awards (vocals) at Wangaratta in 1998.
Susan is a jazz repertoire and improvisation specialist but teaches across many genres including blues, Latin, pop, rock, folk and Music Theatre. She has studied technique with Dame Malvina Major, and attended Estill Model, Speech level singing and Voicecraft workshops.
Excellent for audition prep for university music courses, Susan can also accompany you, or prepare/suggest accompaniment for you.
An expert choral conductor and arranger, Susan is available for conducting and workshops with your choir, or writing/arranging tailored charts for your group.
The lesson content caters to the individual student’s needs. A lesson outline is: a variety of vocal warm ups; vocal techniques addressing the individual needs of the students, relating to their songs; Repertoire is chosen and sung through looking at lyric interpretation, vocal technique, improvisation (as required); Basic or advanced arrangements can be designed for the student and practice backings provided; and, most importantly, choosing the correct key of the song.
