G’day, my name is Geordan. I am a passionate guitarist/ composer/ teacher with 12 years of experience. I completed a Bachelor of Music Performance focusing on Jazz guitar at Monash University in 2014, and I have been teaching professionally for a number of years. I specialise in teaching Jazz, Prog Rock and Heavy Metal but am also well versed in Blues, Funk and Pop styles. I completed VCE Solo Performance back in the stone age where I received an A+ for all 3 outcomes and was chosen to perform in Top Class, thus I am willing and able to mentor VCE Music students, adolescents and adults. I have of course received a working with children’s check. I tailor my lessons to suit individual needs and interests in order to make the experience as fun and engaging as possible, whilst also encouraging healthy practice routines and a sense of discipline. Regardless of whether you want to pursue a career in music or are just playing casually I am certain I can be of assistance!
Regardless of the style(s) a student may want to learn, I place a great emphasis on learning correct and efficient technique. For plectrum players I cover correct right hand picking technique, whether the preference be alternate, economy or hybrid picking. For you chop heads that want to pick your way into the 4th dimension I have plenty of effective speed picking exercises at my disposal.
For students wishing to learn finger style technique I have a number classical guitar books and exercises, as well as finger style pieces ranging from beginner to advanced level of difficulty.
For those who want to learn or improve their knowledge of music theory and composition I can start right at the beginning where the student will learn the mechanics of the major scale and the seven derived modes, as well as basic diatonic harmony. At the advanced level I cover Jazz Harmony, Chromaticism, Arranging/ Orchestration as well as song structuring, how to write effective melodies and chord progressions.
Given my extensive background in Jazz guitar I can of course teach the fundamentals of improvisation, particularly Bebop styles a la Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis and more contemporary Jazz Fusions styles in a la John Scofield and Mike Stern.
